Nicaragua La Roca Maracaturra
Tastes Like: Brown Sugar, Milk Chocolate, Floral
La Roca is produced by 65 small-scale coffee growers that live on the Cordillera of Dipilto, a nature reserve with incredible biodiversity of flora and fauna. It is located very close to the frontier with Honduras. The region is popular because of the annual celebration of the Guadalupe Virgin that take place there. The celebration is a feast and is named after the Virgen de la Piedra who looks over Dipilto from the sacred monument that sits on the mountain in Dipilto. This mountain or “rock” is where La Roca, gets its name from.
Specialty coffee is what makes Dipilto such a well-known area. Conditions such as its elevation, soils, and microclimates make this community ideal for exceptional coffees. Caravela Nicaragua began to work with the small-scale growers in this area in 2012. It wasn’t until the end of 2013 however when we decided to install a cupping lab in Ocotal, allowing us to be closer to the producers to help them produce better quality coffees.
