Onyx Coffee (importers, not to be confused with the roaster) is a new supplier for goodboybob. For several years now, we have searched for a reliable and quality-focused company to partner with for our single origin Guatemala offering. Onyx is more than an importer because its owner, Edwin Martinez, is a third generation Guatemalan coffee farmer with family farms dating to 1957 in Huehuetenango. Since founding Onyx Coffee 17 years ago, Edwin has built a reputation for supplying delicious Guatemalan Coffees based on long-standing relationships throughout Guatemala.
Marcus and Edwin have known each other for many years and finally have put together a special offering for goodboybob, ELLA - Women Producers of Guatemala. The Guatemala-based Onyx team looks to identify exceptional farms that align with their mission and goal of fostering diversity amongst their suppliers. Women perform the majority of farm work in Guatemala, but relatively few actually own the operation. ELLA is a very special blend that brings together coffees from a handful of exceptional women-owned farms in support of this mission.
Our Ella lot is composed of the efforts of three farmers, Sofia Plocharski, Rita Cohen, and Jovita Castillo. The Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuaí varieties undergo 36 hours of fermentation after de-pulping and are dried for 10-14 days on concrete patios. The result is a sweet and crowd-pleasing coffee with balanced flavors of almond, black currant, sage, fig, and fudge.
