About This Coffee

Rwanda Nyampinga is a coffee that is dear to Goodboybob. Marcus Young, our coffee buyer, has worked with this women’s coffee farming cooperative since 2013 when he first visited with Asterie, the cooperative president, and the leadership at their community plot in the Nyanguru province in the South of the country. At their first meeting, Asterie asked Marcus, through his development project, to buy them a washing station - the wet mill where Rwandan coffee is processed. At first, he said this was impossible. Still, after living in Rwanda and working with the group for several years, this dream came true, and the women of Nyampinga started processing their own coffee and finding a home for it on the international market. This is a coffee we love for its complexity, sweetness, and the amazing story of Nyampinga - which loosely translates to “beautiful women, inside and out”.

Rwanda’s government has been clear about the need for economic opportunity in Rwanda, not just aid. As a largely rural country with approximately 500,000 smallholder families engaged in coffee production, Rwanda finds coffee as a key component of its economic recovery. Located just a few degrees South of the Equator, lying at altitudes between 1500 - 2000 masl with a temperate climate, Rwanda is nearly perfect for producing Arabica coffees. In the case of Nyampinga, you see the pain (and recovery from) the genocide reflected in the demographics which are predominantly women, and the ways they have reconciled with their neighbors by working together for a greater common good.

Coffee production in Rwanda is highly distributed amongst families with small family plots. The families then sell their coffee cherries to intermediates or processing stations like Nyampinga. When communities organize cooperatively, the farmers can participate in the processing and sale of the coffee - often receiving additional payments for their hard labor. The results of this work at Nyampinga are sustainable living wages, long-term relationships with buyers ensuring reliable income year after year, and ultimately delicious coffee. A combination of elevation, careful processing, and the Bourbon variety produces a distinctly delicious coffee that has a uniquely full body with flavors of panela, with fresh fruit flavors of black currant supporting a tropical fruit acidity and a lingering dark chocolate finish.

Nyampinga is a women's cooperative in Rwanda that we are so excited to share. Our buyer has worked with the women of Nyampinga since 2013, making this a very special coffee for goodboybob. In the local Kinyarwanda language, Nyampinga means “beautiful women, inside and out.”  This washed processed bourbon variety comes from the southern Nyaruguru region of Rwanda, which borders the Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the best-preserved montane rainforests in Africa.

The small-holder farmers who comprise the Nyampinga cooperative are incentivized to focus on quality through many support and training programs. This has allowed Nyampinga to reach new levels of quality (including making an appearance in the US Barista Competition). As a result, not only is the coffee tasting amazing, but farmers earn more for their coffee than many others through the premium prices paid for their hard work and dedication.

This coffee is ideal for an afternoon pick-me-up. Delicate yet very present are the notes of black currant, hazelnut, and dark chocolate, with distinct tropical fruit acidity and a velvety body.
